The result reached 0dBFS but didn't go over. So, in that case I re-ripped with dBPowerampHDCD to automatically add 6dB. Why they didn't just turn the volume down on those 2 tracks is a mystery.The next group were recorded too low at -6dB which is then pushed down further and sound really quiet on playback. A waste of available technology and a misleading bum steer for the owner.The 2 'intermittent' ones have Peak Extend on one track only and on closer inspection the reason was to fix a volume mis-match with the other tracks on the album. They have been through the Microsonics processor though and will therefore be recognised as HDCD and will switch the light 'on'. That means that these are just normal 16 bit CDs and will be no different whether you play them on a HDCD compliant player or not.
Nice to see the process being used correctly.Now see what happens when you use the dBPowerampHDCD default on them (ie. They expand properly with no need to do anything else. They have Peak Extend and are recorded at a reasonable level to start with.

They probably weren't over by any more than a knat's hair and the error may just have been a rounding error somewhere. Unfortunately when -6dB was added to 6dB the result didn't equal zero and some tracks ended up 'over'. Very bad.The final group of Oldfields were recorded too low for my liking so I used the 'add 6dB' feature in dBPowerampHDCD. All 5 are now grossly over 0dBFS and would therefore be truncated and distorted in integer modes of storage and maybe even when playing depending on the player and device driver and DAC and whatever.
I have recently written posts that agree with your findings:Well there is the silence within tracks. Good.The Reference Recordings ones all had Peak Extend, Low Level Range Extend and Transient Filter all active as one would expect when the inventor does the job.Excellent research and writing, AR. The result was 6dB louder as expected.The rest of the classicals were recorded and expanded correctly and didn't need any volume adjustment. Very strange for Reference to do that.The 'Mozart Piano Concertos' was recorded very low indeed peaking at -9, so that was a candidate to add the 6dB. But maybe my HDCDs aren't representative of the wider pool.The Reference Recordings' 'Bowie variations for piano' is strange in that the cover art says HDCD, it switches the light on, but there are just no features used. I have to investigate those further.18 are just ordinary CDs albeit on a Microsonics13 are unnecessarily quiet and really need more volume (but be careful how it's done) and14% That's not such a good score card.
